PDP shifts screening of aspirants for national convention

Must read

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention earlier fixed for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, announced the postponement in a statement on Monday, citing “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the decision.

He assured that a new date for the exercise would be communicated to all aspirants and members of the party soon, while expressing regrets over the inconvenience the shift might cause.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement,” he said.

The development comes just days after the PDP named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet aspirants for national offices ahead of the convention.

According to the earlier statement by the National Convention Organising Committee, the screening was to take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, under the chairmanship of former Ondo State governorship candidate and legal luminary, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN.

The postponement also follows renewed political tension within the opposition party. Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, recently declared his intention to run for the position of national chairman, despite the earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the northern consensus candidate.

However, some PDP factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, insisting that the process lacked adequate consultation.
