SDP expels former national chairman, youth leader over financial scandal

Must read

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially expelled its former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and ex-National Youth Leader, Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, after finding them guilty of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of party ethics.

The decision, according to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), followed a thorough internal investigation and the adoption of a White Paper report that reviewed findings from the disciplinary panel set up to probe the duo.

Speaking to journalists after the NWC meeting in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said the expulsion was necessary to safeguard the integrity and discipline of the SDP.

“No individual, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to undermine the values of accountability and order that our party stands for,” Aiyenigba declared.

He recalled that Gabam and Uchechukwu were earlier suspended on June 24, 2025, following initial findings that implicated them in acts that breached the party’s financial and administrative codes.

To ensure transparency, the NWC constituted an independent Disciplinary Committee on July 4, 2025, which submitted its report two weeks later.

After reviewing the committee’s recommendations, the NWC unanimously approved their expulsion along with former National Auditor, Clarkson Nnadi, who had already tendered his resignation.

In addition, eight other members, Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu, were also expelled for alleged disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on July 28, 2025.

According to the party, the group was caught by security operatives in possession of confidential documents and valuables reportedly taken from the secretariat.

The case has since been handed over to the police for criminal investigation.

Aiyenigba stressed that the expulsion, which takes immediate effect, aims to restore sanity and unity within the party’s ranks.

“This action is not punitive but corrective. It sends a clear message that the SDP remains committed to transparency, internal democracy, and discipline,” he added.

The NWC further assured that additional administrative reforms recommended in the White Paper would be implemented to prevent future misconduct among party officials.

The internal crisis that led to the expulsions began in June 2025 when the suspended officers were first accused of embezzlement and unauthorised withdrawal of party funds, allegations that have now culminated in their permanent removal from the party.
