The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, on Thursday morning arrived at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu.
Amupitan, clad in a white agbada and gold cap, was seen exchanging pleasantries with dignitaries ahead of the ceremony, which will officially mark his assumption of office as Nigeria’s electoral umpire.
He arrived in company with some presidential aides, while the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 1:00 p.m.
At the same time, Vice President Kashim Shettima is presiding over the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Council Chamber of the Villa, with governors and deputy governors from the 36 states in attendance.
Amupitan’s appearance at the State House comes a week after the Senate confirmed his appointment on October 16, following a detailed screening exercise.
During his confirmation, the 58-year-old law professor had shared his vision to rebuild public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system and implement reforms aimed at strengthening the commission’s credibility.
