Former presidential candidate and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims by political opponents that his party will be defeated in the 2027 general elections, describing such talks as mere fantasy.
Kwankwaso, who spoke during an interview with BBC Hausa as part of his birthday celebration, said those predicting the downfall of the NNPP or the Kwankwasiyya movement are “living in denial” of Nigeria’s changing political reality.
According to the former Kano State governor, the NNPP has continued to grow in strength and influence, especially in Northern Nigeria, where young people are increasingly becoming politically conscious and demanding accountability from leaders.
“The idea that anyone will easily defeat us in 2027 is laughable,” Kwankwaso declared.
“People now understand that elections are not about money or manipulation anymore. The youths are more informed and ready to make their voices count.”
He noted that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement have built a strong grassroots base that transcends party politics, adding that the group’s commitment to service and empowerment remains its biggest asset ahead of the next elections.
When asked about concerns over possible electoral malpractice in 2027, Kwankwaso expressed optimism that the coming polls would be far more transparent than previous ones.
“This time around, the people will guard their votes,” he said.
“We believe the process will be fairer, and those who betrayed our collective struggle will face the consequences at the ballot box.”
Kwankwaso, a two-term governor and influential northern politician, has remained a key figure in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
His remarks come as parties begin early strategising ahead of what many analysts predict will be one of the most competitive elections in the country’s history.
