The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested no fewer than 44 suspects in a series of coordinated midnight operations targeting criminal hideouts across Abuja.
The clampdown, which began around 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday, was simultaneously carried out by officers from the Nyanya, Kubwa, Kurudu, Life Camp, Apo, Karmo, Zuba, Byazhin, and Bwari Divisions.
The operation, according to police sources, focused on notorious black spots, unfinished buildings, and areas known to harbour criminal gangs.
Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, who confirmed the development, said the exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security as the festive season approaches.
“Our objective is to ensure that Abuja remains safe for residents as we approach the end of the year.
“The command will continue to identify and dismantle criminal enclaves across the territory,” the spokesperson stated.
According to intelligence sources, the simultaneous raids were planned following weeks of surveillance and information gathering on suspicious movements in some satellite communities.
The operation, which lasted several hours, was described as “highly successful” by senior officers who participated.
All 44 arrested suspects are currently undergoing thorough screening and interrogation at their respective divisional headquarters.
Police authorities said those found innocent after investigations would be released, while others with proven criminal links would face prosecution.
“This exercise is not a one-off. We intend to sustain the momentum until we flush out every criminal element from the FCT,” another senior officer noted.
Residents have since commended the police for their proactive measures, urging the command to sustain the tempo to ensure that law-abiding citizens can move freely without fear.
The latest operation comes amid renewed police efforts to curb rising cases of robbery, drug abuse, and vandalism in the capital city ahead of the yuletide season.
