Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the police for attacking demonstrators during a peaceful protest held to demand the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television monitored on Monday, Sowore accused the police of targeting the group simply because they conducted themselves peacefully.
He argued that security operatives would have avoided the protesters if they were armed criminals or bandits.
AFRIPOST reports that Sowore spearheaded the “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protest, which took place in different parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday.
“The protest was not only on social media. It happened everywhere around Abuja. We had six spots where we had thousands of people converge en-masse.
“We were at Utako, Gudu, Apo, which has largest crowd, and we moved to the FCT police command where we were tear-gassed ruthlessly.
“Police attacked us because we were peaceful protesters. If we were bandits, they would not come near us.
“Fortunately, we have chosen a no-violence approach to resolving issues but a generation will come that will not accept this nonsense,” Sowore said.
