Gunmen on Friday evening attacked a police station in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing two officers on duty.
The incident threw the community into confusion as residents fled for safety amid heavy gunfire.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the police station, located a few metres from Kamyim Hotel in Kurmin-Bi, Zonkwa, and opened fire indiscriminately.
They were said to have come in a bid to free suspected vandals earlier arrested in Kachia town.
One witness said: “They believed that the suspects were being detained at the Zonkwa police station. However, it was later gathered that the suspects were not being held there. But the havoc had already been done.”
A security source confirmed the attack but declined to provide details.
A video of the incident showed two police officers lying lifeless on the floor, while residents gathered around discussing the assault.
Normalcy was later restored to the town following the intervention of security operatives.
As of press time, the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the attack.
