The Voluntary Independent Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) State Level Monitoring Committee (ISLMC), Benue State, has called for stronger collaboration with the Benue State Police Command to enhance the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the committee, led by its Chairman, Dr. Victoria Daaor, congratulated the Commissioner on his assumption of office and expressed readiness to work closely with the police to promote access to justice for all citizens.
Daaor said the committee, comprising leading non-governmental organizations and government agencies, was established by CLEEN Foundation with support from the Norwegian Embassy to complement the efforts of the Benue State Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC).
She noted that the partnership with the police was crucial to improving compliance with the provisions of the ACJL, especially in matters relating to arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution, and trial.
The committee also urged the police to support judicial and procedural reforms aimed at reducing case backlogs and to participate in public enlightenment programmes that would help citizens understand their legal rights and how to access justice.
It further emphasized the need for cooperation among the police, the judiciary, correctional services and civil society groups to strengthen the state’s criminal justice system and ensure fair treatment for all.
Dr. Daaor reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to working with the police through advocacy, capacity building, and stakeholder engagements to address the challenges affecting the effective implementation of the ACJL in Benue State.
