Soldier kills wife, commits suicide in Niger barracks

Must read

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, and his wife, in a suspected murder-suicide incident that occurred inside the Wawa Cantonment, New Bussa, Niger State, on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The soldier, attached to the 221 Battalion under the 22 Armoured Brigade, was reportedly on duty within the barracks before requesting permission from his superior officers to attend to personal matters at home.

Hours later, both he and his wife were found lifeless inside their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.

Residents of the barracks were said to have been left in deep shock following the discovery, with many expressing disbelief at how a routine day turned tragic.

“It was devastating to see two young lives end so suddenly,” one soldier’s wife, who preferred anonymity, told reporters.

In a statement released by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the 22 Armoured Brigade described the incident as “tragic and regrettable,” assuring the public that a full-scale investigation had been launched to determine what led to the deaths.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate occurrence. The command extends its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” the statement read in part.

Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, also assured that no detail would be overlooked in uncovering the truth.

“We are committed to conducting a transparent investigation. The findings will be made public, and we will take proactive measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents,” he said.

The remains of the couple have been deposited at a military medical facility pending the outcome of the investigation.

The army urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators, emphasising its ongoing efforts to maintain discipline, welfare, and mental well-being among its personnel.
