Kano man jailed eight months for impersonating police officer

Must read

A 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, has been sentenced to eight months in prison by a Shari’a Court in Kano after being found guilty of impersonating a police officer.

Shitu, who resides in Kofar Waika Quarters, was apprehended on September 21, 2025, around 5:00 p.m. at Kofar Dawanau. According to the prosecution, he was dressed in a full police uniform at the time of his arrest, giving the impression of being an officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

During the court proceedings, Prosecution Counsel Zaharaddeen Mustapha told the court that the accused was caught after residents grew suspicious of his behaviour and alerted local authorities. “He was parading himself as a police officer without any official identification or appointment,” Mustapha said.

Upon hearing the charge of impersonation, Shitu pleaded guilty.

Delivering judgment, Khadi Nasiru Ahmad Muhammad, the presiding judge, convicted Shitu based on his confession. The court sentenced him to eight months’ imprisonment with an option of a ₦70,000 fine.

In his ruling, Khadi Muhammad warned others against such acts, describing impersonation as a “serious offence that undermines public trust in law enforcement.”

He added, “No one has the right to wear the uniform of our security agencies without proper authorisation. It is both deceitful and dangerous.”

Shitu’s conviction serves as a reminder of the Kano State government’s renewed effort to curb impersonation and related offences in the state.
