Over 64,000 members of opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State, marking one of the largest waves of political defections in recent months.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, welcomed the new members during a political rally on Saturday, assuring them of full inclusion within the party structure.

According to a statement from Buni’s media aide, Mamman Mohammed, the President pledged that all defectors would be treated equally with long-standing party members.

“From this moment, there will be no difference between you and existing members,” the President stated.

“Your courage and decision to join hands with us in building a stronger nation reflect your belief in progress and unity.”

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s focus on strengthening national security and revitalising key infrastructure to boost economic growth.

He specifically mentioned the completion of the Kano–Maiduguri highway as a priority project to improve trade and transportation in the North.

“Our commitment to improving lives and ensuring safety across Nigeria remains unwavering,” he added.

The President also commended Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi for what he described as “visible and people-centred development strides” that have transformed local communities.

APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who led the party’s National Working Committee to the event, echoed the President’s words, urging the new members to see the APC as their political home.

“This is your party now,” Yilwatda said. “Join us in strengthening democracy and moving Jigawa and Nigeria forward.”

Similarly, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim Masari, appealed to Jigawa residents to continue supporting the APC-led administration, promising that the state would keep benefiting from federal development programs.

“President Tinubu’s government remains committed to delivering meaningful progress,” Masari noted. “Jigawa will not be left behind.”

In his remarks, Governor Namadi expressed confidence that the latest mass defections had solidified APC’s dominance in Jigawa politics.

“With the number of people joining our fold today, no party can challenge APC in this state,” Namadi declared.

“Our partnership with the federal government is already improving lives, and we will keep building on that success.”

The event reinforces APC’s growing influence in Northern Nigeria as the party continues consolidating power ahead of future elections.
