PDP members defecting to APC are cowards – Gov Bala

Must read

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has condemned members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who have recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their actions as “acts of cowardice and betrayal.”

The governor made the remark during the inauguration of the Media Sub-Committee of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), where he emphasised the importance of loyalty and resilience within the opposition party.

According to Mohammed, true party members should remain steadfast and defend the ideals of the PDP instead of abandoning it for political convenience.

“Real leadership is about standing firm even when things get tough,” he said. “Those running to the APC are not demonstrating courage, they’re running away from the fight for Nigeria’s future.”

The PDP has faced a turbulent period since its controversial 2023 presidential primary, which produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its flagbearer over then-Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

The rift has continued to deepen with the recent defection of key political figures, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, to the ruling APC.

Despite the growing wave of defections, Mohammed maintained that the PDP remains Nigeria’s strongest political alternative and will emerge stronger ahead of the next election cycle.

“By the grace of God, no force, earthly or otherwise, can destroy the PDP. If the PDP fails, Nigeria fails,” the governor declared, receiving loud applause from party members.

He reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding the party’s structure and strategy ahead of its forthcoming national convention, adding that the PDP is the only party capable of steering the country out of what he called “the hardship and misgovernance of the APC.”

“We are at a turning point as a nation,” Mohammed noted. “This convention is not just another political gathering, it is the start of a renewed effort to change Nigeria’s leadership direction for the better.”

The Bauchi governor also urged members of the convention committee to engage the public effectively and foster collaboration among all sub-committees to ensure a smooth and transparent event.

“Our media and communication teams must take the message of hope and reform to Nigerians,” he added. “We must show that the PDP is not just ready to lead but ready to lead differently.”

Political analysts believe Mohammed’s comments reflect the PDP’s growing concern about losing more members to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, supporters say his fiery defence of the party could reignite confidence among loyalists and reestablish the PDP’s image as a formidable opposition.
