The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed cautious optimism following the nomination of Professor Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement released late Thursday, October 9, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC would “watch with careful interest” how the new electoral chief manages his duties, stressing that Nigerians expect a leadership committed to fairness, transparency, and credibility in the country’s electoral system.
“We are cautious in our optimism,” Abdullahi said. “However, we hope Professor Amupitan will show personal commitment to restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s elections and prove that his loyalty lies with the Nigerian people, not with any government.”
He noted that the new INEC chairman has a chance to make history by building on his professional record and delivering a legacy that future generations would be proud of.
According to him, Amupitan’s tenure offers a rare opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and rebuild trust in the electoral process.
“His appointment comes with great responsibility,” Abdullahi added.
“He can either distinguish himself through integrity and courage or tarnish his name through compromise and bias. The choice is entirely his.”
The ADC spokesman further urged the new INEC boss to remember that his term will extend beyond one electoral cycle, warning against undue political influence.
He said Amupitan must look beyond the interest of those who nominated him and focus on serving the collective will of Nigerians.
“Our democracy can only thrive when electoral umpires stand firm on the side of truth,” Abdullahi emphasised. “Professor Amupitan has the chance to set that standard.”
The appointment of Professor Amupitan has sparked mixed reactions across political circles, with many urging him to prioritise integrity, transparency, and independence as he assumes leadership of Nigeria’s top electoral body.
