By ALI ADOYI
Twenty-five years ago, he chose a road few dared to take. He stormed into the music scene at a time when many had little or no knowledge of its viability. His boldness unveiled the mystery, exposing the economic potential and true viability of the industry.
The Cradle
Though Innocent Ujah Idibia—fondly called 2Baba—started out on a rough path in the music industry, his emergence, which gave birth to the now-disbanded Plantashun Boiz, turned a rocky industry into fertile ground for a generation of Nigerian and African youths who would later find an escape route through music.
His creativity became a talking point the moment he adopted the stage name 2Face, symbolically distinguishing between his personal and professional life. Since the birth of the 2Face—now 2Baba—brand, the Benue-born artiste has never deviated from his mission. With each passing year, his journey and purpose have become clearer.
The story of 2Baba is that of a child who knew what he wanted, regardless of the kind of spoon he was born with.
He chose the “street university” even though there were calls from every side to further his formal education. The knowledge gained from Mount Saint Gabriel and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, wasn’t enough to hold him back. Instead, he pursued his dream with the raw talent gifted to him by God.
In the pursuit of this dream, he teamed up with Blackface and Faze, but even that could not hold him down. Despite being regarded as the engine room of the Plantashun Boiz, his humility always suppressed such narratives. To him, the success of the band was a team effort, even if some individuals were more talented than others. His departure for a solo career ended the Plantashun Boiz era. It was at that moment society recognized the magnitude of his contribution to the group’s short-lived success.
From the decisive moment he went solo, the path to unlocking his legendary persona became clear—delivering back-to-back successful albums.
Not an Ordinary Singer
To many Nigerians, 2Baba is not an ordinary singer. He is not the everyday kind of artiste. That explains why he remains one of the few who have stayed relevant for 25 consistent years. He raises the bar at every step, and his only competition has always been 2Face Idibia himself.
2Baba does not just sing—he crafts novels out of music. His songs, often rich with didactic messages, resonate across all ages. From celebrating African beauty in the award-winning “African Queen”, to criticizing political failures in “For Instance”, to delivering powerful lessons in humanity with “Only Me”, 2Baba has cemented his place as an all-time, all-round singer.
His music hasn’t just sold Africa to the world—it has transported African sound to every continent. The global status of Nigerian and African artistes changed because pioneers like 2Baba took the initial risk of marketing African music through raw, unmatched talent.
2Baba: The Father, The Husband, The Man
Those close to him describe 2Baba as a true African father who places family responsibilities at the top of his priorities. While many may misconstrue some of his actions as a husband or question his decisions, they often forget that he is human. Society sometimes unfairly judges him using his celebrity status as a yardstick, but 2Baba insists he has the same emotions and vulnerabilities as anyone else.
Though he admits he is not infallible, his commitment to his family and wife has remained evident throughout his journey. His open display of love has never been in doubt.
To him, “what is not working is not working, and what is working is working.” Right now, it is working beautifully with his love, Natasha. It is no coincidence that his 25th anniversary in music coincides with her birthday.
May we know 2baba again?
Friday, November 14th will be another remarkable night at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, as it hosts a triple celebration – 2Baba’s 50th Birthday, his 25th anniversary in the music industry and the birthday of his beloved wife.
The event, packaged by Yankee Entertainment, is fittingly titled:
“The 2Baba Experience… May I Know You Again.”
A Living Legend
2Baba may not have it all, but after 25 years, a legend has indeed emerged—standing tall like an Iroko tree in global music.
Hurray to 2Baba—25 years of greatness, 25 years of inspiration!
