The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Zamfara State has seized no fewer than 151 vehicles in a major crackdown on reckless driving and corruption-related offences during a month-long special operation.
The exercise, carried out in September, was part of intensified efforts by the corps to reduce road accidents and enforce compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
Speaking in Gusau, the State Sector Commander, Aliyu Ma’aji, said the operation was primarily aimed at curbing road traffic offences such as overloading, mixed loading, and dangerous speeding, violations he described as major contributors to accidents on Nigerian highways.
According to Ma’aji, about 75 of the impounded vehicles were seized after their drivers allegedly attempted to bribe FRSC personnel at various checkpoints.
“We take corruption very seriously. Any motorist caught offering bribes or attempting to compromise our officers will face prosecution for both the traffic and criminal offences,” he warned.
He added that another 76 vehicles were apprehended for different infractions, noting that arrangements were ongoing to establish a mobile court that would handle such cases swiftly.
The court, he said, would help ensure that offenders are tried without unnecessary delays.
“Zamfara is a major transit route linking Sokoto, Kebbi, and even the Niger Republic. Many of the overloaded trucks and buses entering our highways are from other states, which makes enforcement a bit challenging,” Ma’aji explained.
The commander urged motorists to always obey traffic laws, stressing that the corps will not relent in its mission to ensure safety on all routes within the state.
“Our officers remain on high alert. Any driver caught violating road safety standards should be ready to face the consequences,” he added.
Ma’aji also appealed to road users, transport unions, and other stakeholders to support the FRSC’s campaign against road crashes.
He emphasised that collective action and public cooperation were vital to achieving safer roads and protecting lives across Zamfara and beyond.
