The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of one of its officers, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, allegedly by his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Haruna, at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Akwa Ibom State.
The tragic incident, according to a statement issued by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Captain Lawal Muhammad, occurred on September 22, 2025, following a domestic dispute between the couple.
AFRIPOST had reported that late Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, died from severe burns after being set ablaze by his wife during an argument.
The couple, who had been married for about six months, were said to have had a heated altercation that degenerated over a family-related issue.
During the quarrel, Mrs. Haruna allegedly set fire to household items, which quickly spread through the apartment, trapping the officer in the flames.
According to the statement, the injured officer was rushed to the Battalion Medical Facility, where he was initially stabilised before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further medical attention.
He, however, succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, October 8.
Describing the officer’s death as deeply unfortunate, Captain Muhammad, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Army, condemned the act and expressed the Army’s condolences to the deceased’s family.
‘’The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna.
‘’The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.
‘’The Nigerian Army is calling for all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation,” Muhammad said in the statement.
The Army further assured that investigations into the incident are ongoing, adding that necessary disciplinary and legal actions would follow upon completion of the inquiry.
