University workers to stage nationwide protest

Must read

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced plans to embark on a one-day nationwide protest.

According to the unions, the protest will commence on Thursday, October 9, over the Federal Government’s failure to address their long-standing demands.

The decision, reached under the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions, followed a review of the government’s response to a series of ultimatums issued by the unions.

JAC, in a circular dated October 6, directed all branches of SSANU and NASU to convene joint congresses on Wednesday to mobilize members for the protest, which will feature campus marches, placard displays, and press briefings.

The unions said the protest became necessary due to the alleged unjust disbursement of N50 billion Earned Allowances, delay in the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreements, non-payment of outstanding salaries, arrears of salary increments, and unpaid third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

In the circular titled “Commencement of Protest Actions,” and signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions recalled that they had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum on September 15, which was later extended by 14 days before expiring on October 6.

It reads: “The last circular of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational & Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) titled ‘Current Status of Our Agitations’ referenced JAC/NS/Vol. III/55, dated 22nd September 2025, refers.

“In light of this development, the National JAC at its meeting held on Monday, 6th October, 2025 hereby directs Branch leadership in the Universities and Inter-University Centres throughout the country to convene a Joint Congress in their respective campuses on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025 to mobilize and prepare for a massive and effective ONE-DAY Protest on Thursday, 9th October, 2025.”

The unions urged all members across federal and state-owned universities to comply strictly with the directive to ensure the success of the protest.
