Atiku–Obi alliance strongest opposition to Tinubu in 2027 — Aide

Must read

A digital media strategist to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has said a potential political alliance between Atiku and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could create the most formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, Olarewaju noted that a partnership between the two opposition leaders would blend governance experience with reform-driven ideas, offering Nigerians a renewed sense of leadership and accountability.

According to him, an Atiku–Obi ticket could even operate as a “co-presidency,” combining their respective strengths and giving citizens access to balanced, inclusive governance.

“Bringing both of them together could give Nigerians a leadership model where competence meets compassion,” Olarewaju said.

He added that both politicians share similar ideologies and leadership philosophies, which, if harnessed, could strengthen the opposition’s national appeal ahead of the 2027 polls.

Olarewaju also praised Atiku’s political maturity and democratic values, describing him as a leader who consistently puts the party’s unity above personal ambition.

“When Atiku lost the PDP primaries to Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, he still campaigned vigorously and delivered Adamawa State for the party. That’s a testament to his loyalty,” he remarked.

He further emphasised that Atiku’s extensive political network and track record make him the most prepared figure to spearhead a united opposition capable of matching Tinubu’s political machinery.

On youth participation, Olarewaju stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on creating opportunities for younger generations to play active roles in politics.

He pointed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a model, highlighting its policy of reserving up to 50 per cent of leadership positions for young people and women.

“Nigerian politics must evolve,” he said. “Parties need to empower Gen Z and even Gen Alpha to take ownership of the country’s future. The energy and creativity of young people are vital to rebuilding our democracy.”

Commenting on the ongoing debate about generational power transfer, Olarewaju revealed that Atiku has expressed readiness to support any younger aspirant who wins the party’s presidential primary.

“Atiku has made it clear that he would step aside for a younger candidate if they earn the mandate. But right now, he remains the most experienced and connected opposition leader who can face Tinubu,” he said.

Olarewaju concluded that a political merger between Atiku and Obi would not only unify the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) structure with the Labour Party’s grassroots following but also redefine Nigeria’s opposition politics.

“In my view, the Atiku–Obi alliance represents the strongest possible opposition ticket. Their partnership could reshape the balance of power in 2027,” he said.
