You couldn’t rescue Anambra, let alone Nigeria – SGF Akume fires Obi

Must read

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying he lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria after failing to deliver transformative governance during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Akume dismissed Obi’s repeated claims of wanting to “rescue Nigeria,” insisting that such promises ring hollow when compared with his record in office.

“How can someone who could not fundamentally change Anambra as a governor suddenly think he can transform 36 states and the FCT? It simply does not add up,” Akume declared.

The SGF further stressed that Nigerians should rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a unifier who has managed to inspire confidence across ethnic and religious divides.

According to him, Tinubu inherited a troubled economy but has been able to chart a new course that is already producing measurable results.

“We must give credit where it is due. The President met a very difficult economy, but today our GDP has grown by 4.4 per cent. That is progress by any standard,” Akume said.

The former Benue governor also emphasised that Tinubu’s style of governance had brought a sense of inclusion across the country, pointing to the president’s ability to maintain cordial relations with Christians, Muslims, and traditional communities alike.

He argued that rather than peddling political slogans about rescue missions, opposition figures like Obi should reflect on their own track records before aspiring to higher office.

“It is easy to make campaign promises, but leadership is about delivery. Some of these people could not even leave a lasting impact in their states, so what business do they have talking about rescuing Nigeria?” Akume asked.

While he did not directly name other opposition leaders, Akume hinted that several of them failed to make any meaningful impact in their own domains, yet continue to present themselves as alternatives to Tinubu’s administration.

The SGF’s remarks add to the growing debate on the credibility of opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 elections, where Obi and other major political figures are expected to test their popularity once again.
