Student shot as SUG election turns violent in Ebonyi

Must read

Tension gripped Ebonyi State University on Tuesday after violence broke out during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election, leaving one student with gunshot wounds.

The incident reportedly unfolded as results were being announced, when a group of individuals attempted to disrupt the exercise with gunfire, throwing the campus into chaos.

Eyewitnesses said the commotion forced students and staff to scamper for safety.

According to the police, three suspects linked to the shooting have been arrested.

Officers at the scene quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent the situation from spiralling further out of control.

One of the assailants’ bullets struck a student, who was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he is receiving medical treatment.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer for Ebonyi State, SP Joshua Ukandu, said a locally fabricated pistol used during the attack was recovered from the suspects.

“Our men acted swiftly to apprehend those behind the violence. The suspects are now in custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” Ukandu stated.

He further assured members of the university community that security operatives will remain vigilant to forestall any repeat of such violence on campus.

Meanwhile, students of EBSU have expressed concern over the incident, urging authorities to tighten security during future elections.

“Campus elections should not become a battleground. We just want to choose our leaders in peace,” one student lamented.

The police have confirmed that the arrested suspects will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
