Police, kidnappers’ clash in Niger leaves four dead

Must read

A joint security operation in Niger State has left four people dead after police officers and vigilantes clashed with suspected kidnappers in Magama Local Government Area.

The confrontation occurred in the early hours of September 12 when operatives of the Special Task Team (STT) of the Niger State Police Command, supported by local vigilante groups, stormed Kokolo forest near Kawo-Auna village following intelligence reports about criminal activity in the area.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Minna.

He explained that the operation was aimed at disrupting kidnappers’ camps believed to be behind recent abductions in the region.

“Our men moved in based on credible intelligence and met strong resistance from the suspects.

“In the ensuing gun duel, three of the kidnappers were neutralised while others managed to escape with injuries.

“Sadly, one of the victims also lost his life during the operation,” Abiodun said.

He added that security operatives recovered two AK-74 rifles and 49 rounds of ammunition after combing through the criminals’ hideout. One kidnap victim was rescued alive.

Local residents told reporters that the sound of heavy gunfire sent panic across nearby villages.

“We were afraid the criminals might retaliate, but the presence of the police and vigilantes gave us some reassurance,” said a community leader in Kawo-Auna.

The police spokesperson urged villagers and surrounding communities to remain vigilant and assist security agencies with useful information.

He particularly appealed to locals to report anyone spotted with unexplained gunshot wounds.

Abiodun further noted that investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing members of the gang.

Niger State has witnessed repeated attacks from kidnappers targeting farmers and travellers, with security agencies intensifying clearance operations to restore safety.
