Panic gripped Zaki-Biam in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday after armed men gunned down a former bandit turned Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) member at the town’s central market.
The victim, identified as Kyoga Joka, was reportedly shot dead in broad daylight by assailants who stormed the busy trading hub and opened fire, sending traders and shoppers fleeing in different directions.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the attackers appeared to have targeted Joka specifically, noting that no other person was injured during the assault.
“People were buying and selling when suddenly gunshots rang out. Everyone ran for safety, and it was later we discovered Joka had been killed,” a trader who witnessed the incident recounted.
Local sources confirmed that Joka had previously renounced banditry and was serving with the Civilian JTF in Ukum before his death.
His killing has heightened fears among residents, who worry about a resurgence of attacks in the area.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but community members have called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and restore calm to the troubled town.
