Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified his congratulatory message to the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, following criticism on social media.
Obi, in his goodwill post on Saturday, had addressed the monarch as “my dear elder brother,” a phrase many considered inappropriate for a revered Yoruba traditional ruler.
The former Anambra governor’s choice of words sparked outrage, with some describing it as a breach of cultural protocol.
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, faulted Obi’s message, saying it showed “lack of cultural sensitivity and diplomatic polish.”
Similarly, media aide to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, described the statement as proof of “cultural ignorance and political arrogance,” insisting that beyond protocol, Oba Ladoja was far older and should have been addressed with the full weight of his traditional authority.
The backlash triggered a flurry of reactions online, with Nigerians debating whether Obi’s informal tone was acceptable when addressing a royal father.
However, the LP flagbearer, in a post on his official X handle on Sunday, stressed that he meant no disrespect to the throne.
“Certainly, no disrespect intended in my goodwill message to His Royal Majesty. I felicitated with my dear elder brother, the newly crowned, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.”
Obi explained that the expression was one he frequently uses for individuals close to him and for whom he has great respect, citing similar references to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
“I have read the concerns of those aggrieved by what they considered improper addressing. I respect protocol and authority, and I try, as much as possible, to adhere to them. However, those who follow me would have noticed that I often prefer to use the expression ‘my dear elder brother’ when addressing individuals especially close to me,” he said.
“In matters of wrongdoing, motive is important. I assure all that my words were borne out of untrammelled goodwill,” he added.
The clarification came as the new Olubadan’s coronation continued to draw goodwill messages from leaders across the country.
