A late-night fire on Thursday gutted no fewer than ten shops located opposite the main entrance of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.
The blaze, which started around 10pm, destroyed property and goods estimated at several millions of naira before help could arrive.
One of the affected shop owners, identified simply as Prince, said he lost everything to the incident.
He said: “I repair laptops and over 400 laptops in my shop have been burnt to ashes. I don’t know what to do; the laptops and my tools are all gone.”
Another trader recounted: “Before we got here yesterday, the shops had already been razed. We lost four deep freezers and drink and others. We’ve others who sells phones too here.”
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, leaving shop owners helpless as their goods went up in flames.
A source attributed the cause to an electrical spark, though officials have yet to issue a formal confirmation.
