Backlash as Gov Eno splashes SUVs on ex-Deputy Govs

Must read

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has come under fire after presenting brand new Land Cruiser SUVs to all former deputy governors of the state.

The governor made the announcement on Thursday night via his official X handle, posting photos of the vehicles and their recipients.

He wrote: “I presented brand new Land Cruisers to all former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State as a token of appreciation for their years of service and sacrifice.

“Their dedication has helped shape our State’s progress, and it’s only fitting they enjoy comfort as they continue to share their wisdom with us. Thank you for your service!”

While Eno described the gesture as a reward for their contributions, it quickly stirred public backlash online.

Some Nigerians reacted sharply. @Alabi Lawrence stated: “Genuine question: does this improve the lives of the common man/woman in your state?”

@The Real Pee added: “They already had cars and project allocations during their tenure. They likely receive pensions. Yet, new cars are given while unemployment and industrial development remain neglected. This governance focuses only on the political class.”

Grok Mr said: “I’m grossly disappointed. Recover these vehicles and apologise to your citizens. The state is filled with vulnerable poor. This money should have been used to build small-scale food industries and employ the poor.”

Another user, @Mylesmonrel, wrote: “This is not a good gesture. Why not invest in pensions, schools, roads, hospitals, or other projects to better citizens’ lives? This appears to be an attempt to secure political support for your next term.”

Dee also commented: “The same people who contributed little during their tenure are rewarded with taxpayer money. How many civil servants have been honoured in comparison?”

Similarly, Yemtech said: “I strongly condemn this lavish gift. It raises serious questions about state resources. Was this expenditure budgeted?”
