A businessman, identified as Derrick Denco, has been killed by armed robbers operating in a Lexus 350 SUV within Benin City, Edo State.
The hoodlums, who were said to be targeting victims wearing jewellery, struck on Igun Street where Derrick had gone to fix his vehicle.
He was reportedly attacked in front of the shop after parking to buy car parts.
Witnesses said the robbers ordered him to surrender his jewellery, but he resisted.
“They shot him twice in the leg,” one of the witnesses recounted.
An eyewitness, Obinna Igwe, said Derrick was in his shop when the incident occurred.
He added that the same gang had been terrorising residents by dispossessing them of jewellery in different parts of Benin City.
The killing sparked panic in the busy commercial area as traders and passersby fled for safety while the robbers escaped in their SUV.
Edo State Police spokesman, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident. He said the command had launched a manhunt for the suspects.
He assured that the criminals would be apprehended soon.
