Third term saga: Only Senator Ken Nnamani can vindicate Obasanjo – Sani

Must read

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has waded into the renewed controversy surrounding former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s alleged third term bid, insisting that only a former Senate President can set the record straight.

Sani, in a statement shared on his official X handle on Monday, September 22, argued that Senator Ken Nnamani remains the only person with the moral authority to clear the air on the issue.

According to him, Nnamani, who presided over the Senate when the alleged constitutional amendment was debated, holds the key to confirming or dismissing claims that lawmakers were offered inducements to extend Obasanjo’s tenure.

“The only credible person alive who can confirm or deny whether members of the National Assembly were bribed to alter the constitution for a third term is none other than Senator Ken Nnamani,” Sani stated.

He stressed that the former Senate President was directly at the center of the debate that saw the controversial amendment defeated in 2006, adding that Nigerians deserve a clear account from him.

Obasanjo has repeatedly denied having any interest in a third term, challenging critics to present evidence.

However, the debate resurfaced recently after the former president, while speaking in Accra, Ghana, said that if he had wanted another term, nothing could have stopped him.

AFRIPOST reports that Sani’s remarks may put fresh pressure on Nnamani to make a definitive public statement on what truly transpired in the Senate during that period.

The controversy over Obasanjo’s alleged third term ambition remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring political debates, nearly two decades after the National Assembly threw out the proposal.
