The Imo State Police Command says it has dismantled a child trafficking syndicate, arresting a self-acclaimed pastor and three others for allegedly stealing and selling a one-month-old baby.
According to the police, the baby belonged to a 22-year-old woman, identified as Precious Ochasi, who was deceived into believing her child had died shortly after birth.
Investigators revealed that the infant was later sold for N900,000 with the help of an agent and a nurse who are now on the run.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye, in a statement issued on Thursday, confirmed that four suspects were apprehended on September 11 through a joint operation between officers of the command and youths from Ohaji community.
Those arrested include 44-year-old Albert Chidumaga, who claimed to be a pastor; 58-year-old Rose Isiguzo; 50-year-old Ikechukwu Ezemadu; and 46-year-old Orji Moses.
Mr Okoye explained that Chidumaga had impregnated Ochasi and later conspired with a nurse identified only as Blessing and a trafficking agent named Chioma to dispose of the child. Both alleged accomplices remain at large.
“The young mother was tricked into believing her baby had died at birth. It was a calculated plot to traffic the infant,” Okoye said.
Community members expressed shock over the incident, describing it as a betrayal of trust. One resident told reporters, “It is heartbreaking that someone who claimed to be a man of God could exploit a young woman in such a wicked manner.”
The police spokesperson assured that efforts are underway to track down the fleeing suspects and recover the child.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may involve child trafficking or illegal adoption rings.
“We are intensifying investigations to ensure that all those involved face the full weight of the law. Protecting the rights of children remains a top priority,” Okoye added.
The case has sparked outrage across Imo, with rights groups calling for stronger measures against child trafficking, which remains a growing concern in parts of Nigeria.
