A vigilante commander has been gunned down in Kwara State following a late-night raid by suspected bandits that also left several residents missing.
The attack has deepened fears in communities already grappling with a wave of abductions.
Eyewitnesses said the victim, identified as Tetengi, was killed around 10 p.m. on Wednesday when heavily armed gunmen stormed Kakafu village in Lade District, Patigi Local Government Area, firing sporadically.
Residents disclosed that Tetengi was shot dead while attempting to defend the village.
“We lost a brave man who confronted the bandits head-on. Sadly, he didn’t survive,” one community member told reporters.
The raid reportedly sent villagers fleeing into nearby bushes. Although the exact number of kidnapped victims remains unclear, locals believe several residents were whisked away.
Community members expressed frustration over the absence of timely security backup.
“We kept calling for help, but no reinforcements came until after the gunmen had left,” another villager lamented. “The government must act fast. These attacks are becoming unbearable.”
