BREAKING: Rivers Assembly resumes plenary after six months

Must read

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reconvened for plenary following the lifting of the six-month emergency rule in the state.

Lawmakers gathered on Thursday at the Assembly Residential Quarters in Port Harcourt, since the main chamber remains under repair after last year’s fire incident.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule presided over the session, marking the first sitting since March when President Bola Tinubu dissolved democratic structures in the state.

The resumption comes a day after the president announced the end of the emergency administration and directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the Assembly to return to office.

Legislative business is expected to focus on pending matters, including budgetary approvals and oversight activities that were suspended during the rule of the sole administrator.

AFRIPOST reports that the plenary is a significant step toward restoring full democratic governance in Rivers, though political tensions between the governor and the lawmakers remain a major test for stability.
