Tension erupted at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday as security aides attached to Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, staged a protest over unpaid entitlements.
The incident reportedly occurred while protocol officers were preparing the Administrator’s convoy for an urgent trip to Abuja.
A source, who asked not to be named, said the security operatives mistakenly thought Ibas was relocating permanently to the Federal Capital Territory.
Angered by the perceived move and delays in their payments, some officers attempted to block the Administrator’s convoy, chanting demands for their outstanding allowances.
A video of the protest later circulated on social media.
Senior security officers quickly intervened, calming the aides and explaining that the Administrator’s trip was temporary.
Normalcy was however restored shortly afterward.
The Rivers State Government has not issued an official comment on the protest, but sources said management and personnel at the Brick House were aware of the incident.
At press time, the Administrator’s convoy was stationed at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, as Ibas attended an emergency meeting in Abuja.
