The Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) has raised fresh concerns over the safety practices of the Dangote Group, urging the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulators to thoroughly review the company’s transport operations.
According to the association, Dangote’s fleet of drivers has repeatedly been linked to deadly road accidents across the country, with several high-profile crashes in recent weeks fueling public alarm.
DAPPMAN’s warning comes at a time when Dangote Group recently introduced thousands of new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks to distribute petroleum products nationwide.
While acknowledging the cleaner energy initiative as a positive step, the group insisted that safety must remain a top priority.
“We welcome innovations that reduce environmental impact, but safety cannot take a back seat.
“Nigerians cannot afford more lives lost to reckless driving and poorly supervised truck operations,” a DAPPMAN spokesperson said in a statement.
The marketers’ body argued that adding 4,000 new trucks to already congested highways without strict enforcement of driver training, retraining, and regular safety audits would expose citizens to heightened risks, especially since petroleum products are highly flammable.
DAPPMAN also called for a multi-stakeholder intervention, urging the FRSC, the insurance sector, and relevant government agencies to conduct an independent audit of Dangote’s transport division.
“Before these trucks are deployed on a large scale, there must be mandatory driver vetting and road safety compliance checks,” the statement emphasised.
Communities along major highways, including the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway, are already feeling the impact of rising truck traffic, with reports of worsening congestion and deteriorating road infrastructure.
“The lives of residents, public property, and national infrastructure are at stake if proactive steps are not taken now,” the association added.
