FCT doctors begin indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, poor facilities

Must read

Doctors under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have downed tools indefinitely over the government’s failure to meet their demands.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-FCTA) announced on Monday that the strike, which takes immediate effect, follows the expiration of its seven-day warning strike.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ARD-FCTA President, Dr. George Ebong, said the action was the outcome of a congress held on Sunday.

He clarified that the move was not a personal attack on the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, or any official, but a protest against what he described as the collapse of the health sector in the territory.

“The government is to meet any of our demands financially and non-financially.

“The Government of FCTA has refused to listen; the Congress has mandated that until they listen, we will go on strike starting from this morning, Monday, September 15th, 2025.

“This is not targeted against the minister or mandate secretary, but against a failed health system.

“We call on the Minister of FCT to do the needful.

“The Congress voted for an indefinite strike until our demands are met.

“Non-payment of 26 of our members after a long dialogue of seven months.

“The issue of unemployment has continued to affect the service to our patients. Unexplained deduction of salary and promotion since 2023.

“Some of the hospitals do not have X-rays. Hospitals are not favourable for working.”

The doctors said the decision became inevitable after repeated appeals to authorities yielded no result.

The communique issued at the end of their emergency general meeting on September 14, 2025, catalogued a long list of grievances, ranging from unpaid salaries, irregular payments, and stalled promotions, to poor hospital conditions across the FCT.
