Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has downplayed speculations that he has already declared interest in contesting for governor in the 2027 general elections.
Obasa, who featured on TVC’s political programme Beyond the Headlines, said his comments had been taken out of context by some sections of the media, fueling unnecessary assumptions about his next political step.
According to him, his remarks were simply a reminder that political aspirations in Nigeria must align with the hierarchy and decisions of the party.
“I never announced any plan to run for governor or senator. In politics, you don’t decide your future alone; the party and its leadership play a central role,” he said.
The Lagos Speaker emphasised that his immediate focus is not on personal ambition but on supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and contributing to national development.
“For now, what concerns us most is the progress of the country. President Tinubu is making strides daily, and that should be our collective priority,” he added.
Obasa, however, clarified that he has no intention of quitting politics, noting that life after public service is also a consideration for every politician.
He described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a united political family where members must remain committed to its structures and respect decisions taken by party leaders.
“In politics, you can aspire to any office, but it is the party that eventually decides where each person fits. Whether as Speaker, Governor, or Senator, it all comes down to consultation and alignment with party leadership,” he explained.
The Speaker urged supporters to remain patient and avoid being misled by unverified claims, assuring that discussions within the APC would shape the political direction of its members ahead of 2027.
