In a major political realignment, no fewer than 792 women have abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State.
The mass defection took place on Friday during a ceremony in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, where the women were officially welcomed into the APC fold.
The governor’s wife, Hajiya Amina Umar Namadi, who received the defectors, described the switch as proof of the growing confidence in the leadership of Governor Umar Namadi.
She highlighted her husband’s policies on women’s empowerment and youth development as key factors behind the shift.
“This movement is not just about politics; it is about trust in a government that has shown real commitment to uplifting women and young people in Jigawa,” she said.
Mrs. Namadi encouraged the new members to see themselves as active contributors to the state’s progress, adding that the APC was open to all residents who shared its vision of development.
Also addressing the gathering, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, said the Namadi administration would continue to prioritise citizens’ welfare.
“Our focus remains on improving the daily lives of ordinary people. We want every resident, no matter their background, to feel the impact of good governance,” Ibrahim assured.
The defection, observers say, could strengthen the APC’s grassroots network in Jigawa ahead of future elections, particularly as women play a vital role in mobilizing voters across communities.
