Mob attacks Kano police station, leaves one dead, vehicles torched

A violent mob attack on the Garko Police Division in Kano State has left one person dead, several others injured, and multiple government vehicles destroyed.

The incident occurred late Friday, September 5, 2025, when youths stormed the station in protest over the killing of a resident from the Wudil area.

According to police authorities, three suspects had earlier been arrested in connection with the killing and transferred to the Garko Division for interrogation.

“What started as a demand for justice turned into a full-blown assault on the station,” said Kano Police Command spokesperson, ASP Usman Bello, in a statement issued Saturday.

“The crowd, armed with sticks and stones, attempted to forcefully seize the suspects, disrupting police operations in the process.”

The mob reportedly set a police patrol van ablaze, vandalised three vehicles belonging to the Hisbah Board and Garko Local Government, and shattered windows at the divisional headquarters.

Police confirmed that three officers were injured in the attack and taken to Wudil Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Tragically, one protester was killed after being struck by a burning tyre during the chaos, while three others sustained injuries.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Sani, immediately deployed a rapid-response team to restore calm in the area.

“We acted swiftly to prevent further loss of life and property. Our engagement with local leaders has helped stabilise the situation,” Sani said.

Authorities have so far arrested nine individuals linked to the mob action, with investigations ongoing to track down others involved in the violence.

“The command will ensure that all those responsible for this attack face the full weight of the law,” ASP Bello added, urging residents to allow justice to take its proper course rather than resort to violence.

Security has since been reinforced at the Garko Police Division, while community stakeholders are working with law enforcement to prevent a repeat of the incident.
