Troops foil planned militia attack in Plateau, arrest suspect

Must read

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully intercepted an armed militia believed to be preparing for an assault on several communities in Plateau State.

Military officials confirmed that the operation, carried out by soldiers under Operation Enduring Peace, prevented what could have been another violent attack in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

According to sources familiar with the incident, the soldiers acted swiftly after receiving a distress alert.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Umar Yakubu, was arrested at Kaskra in Ropp District at about 1:40 p.m. on September 4.

During the arrest, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, and 11 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the suspect.

Investigators revealed that Yakubu had allegedly been mobilised from the Kuka Bakwi Fulani Camp to carry out coordinated attacks on Nding village.

Security forces have since intensified their search for other members of the armed group believed to be planning similar assaults in the area.

“This swift intervention is part of our continued commitment to safeguard lives and ensure lasting peace in Plateau communities,” a senior military officer said anonymously.

“We will not relent until every militia network threatening the peace of this region is dismantled.”

The suspect remains in custody and is currently undergoing interrogation as authorities work to trace his collaborators and retrieve more illegal weapons.

The Nigerian Army urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, stressing that community support is vital in ending recurring violence in Plateau State.
