Police summon El-Rufai, ADC leaders over criminal allegations

Must read

The Kaduna State Police Command has issued an invitation to former governor Nasir El-Rufai and seven top political figures for questioning over a string of alleged criminal offences, intensifying political tensions in the state.

According to the police, the allegations involve criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, destruction of property, and inflicting grievous harm.

The summons, signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation, Zubairu Abdullahi, directed El-Rufai to appear alongside senior members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for interrogation.

An excerpt from the police letter reads: “This department is investigating a case reported on 8th September, 2025.

You are requested to present yourself and the listed party members at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to clarify allegations raised by the complainants.”

Those listed include El-Rufai, Bashir Saidu, Ja’afaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (popularly known as Mikiya 30), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini, also known as Mikiya.

Reacting to the development, some ADC members denied receiving any formal invitation from the police, claiming they only became aware of the summons through social media reports.

“No official letter has reached us. What we’re seeing online is the same thing everyone else is reading,” an ADC official told AFRIPOST on Monday.

The latest twist follows violent disruptions over the weekend during the inauguration of a coalition of opposition transition committee members in Kaduna.

Armed attackers wielding cutlasses, clubs, and stones stormed the venue, attacking participants and vandalising properties.

Despite the assault, the coalition, made up of figures from a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Labour Party (LP), and the ADC, managed to proceed with its programme under heavy tension.

In a statement, Kaduna Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, linked the violence to what he described as negligence by the former governor.

“Mr. El-Rufai failed to inform the police or other security agencies about the gathering, despite repeated advisories,” Hassan said.

Political analysts warn that the incident could heighten political instability in Kaduna as the state grapples with shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Some believe the police move signals a growing crackdown on opposition activities, while others see it as a legitimate step toward addressing rising political violence.
