The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended six young men accused of stealing transformer cables and vandalising electricity installations in several parts of Kano State.

The suspects were reportedly intercepted following a tip-off from local vigilante groups, who alerted security operatives about suspicious activities in the area.

According to a statement issued by the NSCDC spokesperson, SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the arrests were made in Hayin Da’e, Hotoro, within Tarauni Local Government Area.

The operation led to the recovery of cables believed to have been removed from power transformers during the night.

Those in custody were identified as Muhammad Yusuf, 18; Muhd Sani Adamu, 19; Umar Musa, 19; Ahmed Auwal, 20; Muhd Yusuf, 28; and Usman Ali, 19. Most of them are said to reside in the same community where the theft occurred.

“Early findings indicate that this group has been troubling residents of Hayin Da’e, Farawa Kwanar Yashi, and Hotoro eastern bypass with repeated incidents of burglary, theft, and vandalism targeting electricity facilities,” Abdullahi explained.

He added that all six suspects have already confessed to their involvement, and investigations are underway to trace other accomplices linked to the crime.

“This matter will not stop at arrests,” the spokesperson assured. “Once investigations are finalised, the suspects will be taken before the court to face charges.”

Meanwhile, the Kano State Commandant, Shafi’u Abdulmumini, has directed intensified patrols and surveillance across the state to prevent further vandalism and other criminal acts targeting public infrastructure.
