National convention: PDP governors clash with Wike’s loyalists

Must read

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing rising internal tensions as its governors, led by Bauchi State Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Senator Bala Mohammed, push back against demands from a faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The governors insist that the party will no longer tolerate attempts to destabilise its upcoming national convention.

The Wike-aligned group, calling itself the “Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP,” recently released a statement insisting that the convention proceed without any micro-zoning and that the party’s National Chairman remain in the North-Central region, following the 2021 zoning arrangement.

The faction said these measures were critical to ensuring peace and stability within the party.

But Governor Mohammed fired back, making it clear that the governors and party leadership would not be intimidated.

“We cannot remain silent while a few individuals try to drag us to destruction,” he said.

“The National Chairman has spoken clearly, and the convention committee consists of seasoned leaders who have handled this process successfully before and will do so again.”

He praised the National Working Committee for its dedication but warned that the time for restraint had passed.

“As governors, we stand fully behind the party leadership,” Mohammed added. “We are not weak and we are not afraid of anyone. Arrogance and impunity will no longer be tolerated within this party.”

The governor emphasised that discipline would be enforced strictly, and no member, regardless of influence, would be allowed to undermine party unity.

“It stops here. Enough is enough,” he said. “We will no longer allow anyone to take this party for granted.”

AFRIPOST reports that the comments highlight the growing friction within the PDP as it prepares for a national convention that could shape the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
