President Trump withdraws Kamala Harris’s Secret Service protection
Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive Secret Service protection, following an order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, CNN has reported.
The directive, dated Thursday, instructs the Department of Homeland Security to discontinue all security measures previously extended to Harris beyond the legal minimum.
“You are hereby authorised to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorised by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter reportedly states.
Under U.S. law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office, a period that officially ended for Harris on July 21.
An extension of her security coverage, granted by President Joe Biden in the final days of his administration, had previously kept her under protection for an additional year, though this extension was not publicly disclosed until now.
Harris is set to begin a nationwide book tour promoting her memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her short-lived presidential campaign.
The memoir is slated for release on September 23. Her increased public engagements likely contributed to concerns over personal security.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” said Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris.
This move mirrors previous actions by Trump targeting his political successors. In February, he revoked President Joe Biden’s security clearance and cut off his intelligence briefings, citing grievances over how he was treated following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Security experts note that Harris, as the first woman and first Black woman to hold the vice presidency, faced unique threats during her tenure, particularly after her historic presidential bid.
