Must read

Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished Customs chiefs as Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha, who led the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) between 1999 and 2003, has passed away.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, describing Mustapha as a man who lived a life of service and integrity.

“I am deeply pained by the passing of Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha. He was a figure of honour, whose dedication to duty left a lasting mark on the nation.

“My thoughts are with the Lamido Adamawa, the Musdafa royal family, and all who are grieving. May Allah reward him with Aljannah Firdaus,” Fintiri said.

Mustapha, who held the prestigious traditional title of Sardauna Adamawa, was the elder brother of the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha.

He began his career as a young cadet officer in the Nigeria Customs Service and gradually worked his way up the ranks.

His appointment as Comptroller-General in 1999 came at a critical period, coinciding with the return of democratic governance in Nigeria.

During his leadership, the NCS intensified anti-smuggling campaigns and strengthened its role in protecting Nigeria’s economy.

He also served on several national task forces set up to curb economic sabotage, earning recognition for his efforts.

One of the highlights of his career was in 1988 when he was honoured with the Ministerial Award for Outstanding Performance, underscoring his dedication to public service.

Mustapha retired from Customs in December 2003 after more than 30 years of meritorious service.

In retirement, he remained an influential voice within the Customs community and the Adamawa Emirate, where his wisdom and guidance continued to be highly respected.

His death marks the end of an era for both the Nigeria Customs Service and the people of Adamawa State, where he was revered as a statesman and traditional leader.
