A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced a former senior government official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of embezzlement.
Hilario Mitogo, press director of the Supreme Court, confirmed that the Bioko provincial tribunal convicted Engonga for diverting funds allocated for professional travel expenses to personal use.
The official, who previously headed the national financial investigation agency, was also slammed with a $220,000 fine.
Engonga, once considered an influential figure, was tried alongside five other top government officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funds.
Egonga’s fall attracted global attention last year after several sex tapes involving him and multiple women, including the spouses of fellow officials, leaked online.
The case was filed shortly after his arrest in November, when both the scandalous videos and financial fraud allegations became subjects of investigation.
