The Imo State Police Command has intensified security operations in Okigwe following a brutal assault that left five people dead and one other injured.
The victims, including a youth vigilante member, were gunned down by suspected assailants believed to be linked to the proscribed IPOB/ESN.
Police confirmed in a press release on Monday that the attackers not only opened fire on villagers but also set ablaze the home of a local security leader and destroyed several motorcycles during the incident.
The victims, identified as Edeh George, Emeka Ezeagwula, Chikodi Ezeagwula, Chidi Chileke, and Ejike Nwankwo, were pronounced dead at the General Hospital in Okigwe after being evacuated by emergency responders.
One survivor of the attack is currently receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Imo Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, who is personally overseeing the joint operation with sister security agencies and vigilante groups, condemned the killings in strong terms. He vowed that the perpetrators would not escape justice.
“This barbaric act will not go unpunished. We are committed to hunting down those behind the attack and ensuring they face the full weight of the law,” CP Danjuma declared.
He also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the quick recovery of the lone survivor.
The police command assured residents of Okigwe and surrounding communities that security has been reinforced. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
