Traditional worshippers group claims spell behind Alaafin-Ooni clash

Must read

The Traditional Religion Worshippers Association in Osun State has raised concerns over the escalating tension between two of Yorubaland’s foremost monarchs, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.

Oluseyi Atanda, President of the association, told Punch that the repeated disagreements between the kings may be influenced by spiritual interference.

He urged that traditional rituals be performed to address the rift and prevent further escalation.

“The two monarchs are devoted to our traditional religion.

“They come from the same ancestry. Why are they at odds? A spell may have been cast to destabilise Yoruba unity,” Atanda said.

The dispute reignited recently when the Alaafin criticised Ooni’s decision to confer the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Dotun Sanusi.

Atanda warned that such clashes could escalate, with factions forming among other Yoruba monarchs, potentially leading to a broader crisis.

“It is troubling that leaders who are supposed to uphold Yoruba traditions are caught in such a needless quarrel. Their aides must exercise caution,” Atanda added.

When asked directly if the monarchs could be under a spell, Atanda responded, “It is possible. Both kings are wealthy, influential, and highly exposed.

There is no clear reason for this dispute, which makes the involvement of external forces a consideration.”

The association’s statement underscores rising anxieties among Yoruba traditionalists about unity and the preservation of cultural heritage amid the publicised feud between two of their most prominent leaders.
