Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party will converge on Gusau, Zamfara State, this weekend for a crucial meeting ahead of the party’s national elective convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.
A reliable source within the party’s National Working Committee told The Punch that the PDP Governors’ Forum would use the meeting to deliberate on key issues to ensure the smooth conduct of the convention billed for November 15 and 16.
According to the source, the governors are expected to arrive in Gusau on Friday, while the meeting proper will hold on Saturday.
The source said, “The party leaders, that is, governors, Board of Trustees, National Working Committee, and others, are aware of the importance of the Ibadan Convention. The convention is crucial to the future of the PDP.”
The insider explained that while most governors had agreed to embrace political solutions in resolving disputes within the party, they were equally ready to rely on its internal structures to enforce decisions where necessary.
The source expressed optimism that the convention would unite all factions and strengthen the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I am confident that our leaders, especially the governors, have resolved to prioritise political solutions where needed to guarantee that the Ibadan Convention on November 15 and 16 proceeds as planned. They are also ready to enforce decisions through the party’s structures if required.
“With this approach, our leaders will cooperate fully, the Ibadan Convention will take place as scheduled, and the PDP will position itself to rescue Nigeria from the ineffectiveness of the All Progressives Congress in 2027,” he stated.
