A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has recounted a harrowing experience after being allegedly attacked by operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
In a detailed video shared on X, Edema Elowi Jennifer described the assault as sudden, traumatic, and entirely unprovoked.
Jennifer revealed that the incident occurred on July 23, around 5 p.m., at her lodge in Oba.
“My colleagues and I were charging our phones when there was a knock on the door. Initially, we thought it was a neighbour, but before I could open it, the door was kicked in,” she recounted.
She said a masked man brandishing a gun, without any official identification or uniform, confronted them.
“At first, I assumed it was a robbery, but he ordered us outside,” Jennifer said.
Despite showing their NYSC identity cards and clarifying they were corps members, Jennifer said the vigilantes ignored them and began ransacking their room.
“They packed our laptops, phones, and other belongings. When we asked them to verify with our lodge owner or NYSC officials, they refused,” she added.
Jennifer also described being dragged downstairs and forced into a vehicle marked with “Anambra Vigilante Group.”
“They beat me, tore my clothes, and slapped me. My colleague, who tried to intervene, was struck with an iron rod,” she said, noting that threats were made against them if they contacted anyone for help.
The NYSC member called for accountability and expressed fear over the unchecked power of local vigilante groups.
Her testimony has sparked outrage online, with many questioning the conduct of the AVG operatives.
