The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set a new date for the rerun of the Zamfara by-election, which was earlier declared inconclusive.
INEC explained that the supplementary election became necessary because the margin between the leading candidate and the runner-up was smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in polling units where voting was cancelled.
Dr. Mahmuda Isah, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, said, “We have put in place all necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and credible Zamfara by-election rerun.
“We call on political parties, voters, and security agencies to cooperate fully to guarantee its success.”
The inconclusive by-election took place in Kaura-Namoda South Constituency, Zamfara State.
The Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu of Federal University Gusau, reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 7,001 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had 5,339 votes.
The 1,662-vote margin was less than the 3,265 PVCs collected in affected polling units.
Sa’adu further noted that the total number of registered voters in the cancelled polling units was 5,446.
“The supplementary election is necessary to ensure that every eligible voter has a chance to participate,” he said.
INEC confirmed that the rerun will hold on Thursday, August 21, and reassured all stakeholders that the commission is committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election in Zamfara.
