The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally rejected the outcomes of the August 16 bye-elections in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies.
The party claims the elections were riddled with intimidation, bribery, and manipulation allegedly orchestrated by state authorities.
In a statement released on Monday, PDP state chairman Sir Edward Percy Masha described the polls as “a sham” and vowed to pursue legal and political avenues to challenge the results.
“The abduction of our candidate and members of our campaign team in Chikun/Kajuru, the confiscation of funds intended for logistics, and the blatant public display of vote buying all demonstrate the desperation of the failed Uba Sani administration,” Masha said.
The party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deploying “Gestapo and commando tactics” to suppress voter choice, arguing that such actions highlight the party’s concern over the opposition’s rising influence across Kaduna State.
Beyond rejecting the results, the PDP expressed alarm over the low voter turnout, which it said reflects growing public mistrust in the electoral process.
“If this trend continues unchecked, voter apathy will worsen and could reach a critical level by 2027,” the statement warned.
Despite condemning the elections, the PDP commended its supporters for their dedication and resilience, pledging to strengthen internal structures and ensure credible representation moving forward.
“We urge the people of Kaduna State to remain steadfast in supporting the PDP. Together, we will restore fairness, dignity, and genuine democracy in our state,” Masha added.
Responding to the PDP’s rejection, Kaduna State Commissioner of Information Designate Malam Ahmed Maiyaki defended the exercise, calling it “proof of Governor Uba Sani’s inclusive governance and people-centred policies.”
He further stated that the bye-election results have strengthened the APC’s presence in areas previously considered opposition strongholds, consolidating its control across the state.
