Tension gripped residents of Okereke Street, Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt, after a man, identified only as ‘Doctor,’ allegedly stabbed his lover to death following accusations of infidelity.
The deceased, identified as Ima, was said to have been accused by the suspect of being unfaithful, triggering heated argument between the two.
Eyewitnesses reported that the quarrel escalated until the man allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the woman, who bled to death.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, recounted the incident.
He added, “There was a crowd in the compound because of what happened. So the caretaker of the compound quickly rushed to the Azikiwe Police Division in Mile 2, Diobu to make a formal complaint about it and the man was arrested.”
By Monday morning, a large crowd of sympathisers had gathered at the Azikiwe Police Division when the woman’s corpse was brought to the station.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect was in custody.
Iringe-Koko stated, “As we speak, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Port Harcourt for discreet probe.”
Reacting to the development, a rights activist and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, condemned the killing and urged people to avoid toxic relationships.
Wiro stated, “This morning, while I was walking along Illabouchi Mile 2 Diobu PortHarcourt.I saw a mammoth crowd at the Azikiwe Police Division, and I enquired what had happened. I was meant to understand that the Police arrested a man for allegedly killing his female lover.”
